Bahawalpur’s Sherbagh Zoo has been temporarily closed after a man was mauled to death by lions, as confirmed by Curator Ali Usman Bukhari. The victim’s identity remains unknown, prompting a comprehensive investigation by committees formed by Caretaker Chief Minister Punjab Mohsin Naqvi and Commissioner Bahawalpur.
The preliminary postmortem report from Bahawal Victoria Hospital revealed that the man was gruesomely attacked by the lions, attempting to defend himself before succumbing to the mauling. The administration is perplexed about how the man gained access to the enclosure.
The tragic discovery occurred during routine cleaning when zoo staff found a shoe in the mouth of one of the lions, leading them to the grim finding. Zaheer Anwar, a senior government official in Bahawalpur, expressed disbelief at the incident, suggesting the possibility of the intruder being “lunatic” due to the secured nature of the den. He noted that the enclosure’s stairs might have been used for access.
